With more than one quarter
of U.S. bridges assessed as structurally deficient and/or functionally
obsolete, the urgency of conducting routine bridge inspections to
ensure continued performance of the nation's ailing highway network
is clear. Edwards and Kelcey has worked with state and local
governments and railroads for more than 30 years to inspect and
assess the structural function, accessibility, and load ratings
of highway crossings and structures throughout the country.
Edwards and Kelcey has been
involved with the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) program
since its inception in 1971, following the 1967 collapse of Silver
Creek Bridge in West Virginia . We performed the first NBIS inspections
of all 2,000 bridges in New York City in 1972-1974. During that
time and the period that followed, EK worked with the New York State
DOT to develop the general bridge inspection, underwater inspection
and movable span inspection standards and specifications that are
used today by many state and local agencies around the country.
We have completed evaluations
and ratings on essentially every type of highway and railroad bridge,
ranging from single span timber stringers to stone arches to complex
viaducts and trusses from the Northeast to Florida to the Midwest
to Texas . Our portfolio also includes extensive underwater bridge
inspection work and tunnel evaluations.
